Developing Novel Plant Transformation Technologies
Plant transformation science plays critical roles for biotechnology and functional genomics as the global market value of transgenic crops exceeded $6.9 billion in 2007, and the demand for efficient plant transformation methods for functional genomics increases as genome sequences for plant species become rapidly available. The technology of plant transformation is only moderately or marginally successful in many important cultivars of crops, which can be a major limiting factor for the biotechnological exploitation of economically important plant species and it can also impair the wider application of genomic science.
Numerous technologies have been developed to improve plant transformation efficiency. However, the main restriction to the advancement of plant transformation science is that little is known about the molecular mechanisms that underlie the technologies required for plant transformation. My research focus is to develop new plant transformation technologies and study biochemical and molecular mechanisms of plant transformation technologies in collaboration with academic and industrial organizations. |
