Molecular Breeding

Switchgrass Transformation System

Development of Elite Switchgrass Cultivars Adapted to Local Environments

Molecular Breeding

Biotechnology has become a powerful tool to improve agricultural production because certain traits can be transferred into breeding lines that are impossible in conventional breeding. With our established switchgrass transformation system, we can genetically engineer some important genes for trait improvement via overexpression or suppression of target genes using RNA interference technique. Currently we focus on genes involved in floral development, leaf senescence, and stress tolerance to develop elite switchgrass cultivars adapted to local environments.
